regular basis, over time sand can clump and calcify,
creating channels where water can go through
unfiltered, so it should replaced every 5 years.
Sand media is said to be able to filter
out 20 microns particles,
where as glass media needs to be
changed approximately every
8-10 years and can filter out particles
as small as 10 microns.
